Jan Ullrich’s first art was published in the children’s pages of the newspaper when she was in primary school. Although always interested in painting, she didn’t continue it until she retired from work, when she studied pen and watercolour with Jean Stewart Beddison.
Since then Jan has been a member of Marion Art Group, an enthusiastic painter and successful exhibitor. She enjoys botanical painting, and is inspired to record the history of old country towns in paint.
In 2014 Jan was presented with an ‘Unsung heroes’ award by the city of Marion for her contribution to art through teaching, committee work for MAG (past President and exhibition co-ordinator), and work at Gallery M and the Red house.
Jan feels art can be an escape from cares, and should stir something in the viewer, whether it be a memory, a feeling, or a desire to visit the place depicted.
